Make UK, the manufacturer’s organisation, is the largest sectoral employers’ organisation in the UK. Make UK wished to better understand the manufacturing industry’s needs and how best to serve them in the run-up to Brexit: allowing them to represent members’ needs to Government, as well as supporting their members in preparing for EU exit and its implications for their businesses.
ComRes combined quantitative insight from a nationally representative survey of more than 500 manufacturing business decision-makers, with qualitative findings from three face-to-face workshops in Birmingham, Newcastle and London with decision-makers from Make UK's membership.
The survey conclusively showed the impact uncertainty around Brexit was having on the manufacturing sector, with respondents outlining the effects they were already facing, including recruitment difficulties, and losing out on investment or new contracts. The study also illustrated the potential consequences of a no-deal Brexit, with one in six saying that business would become untenable for them if the UK reverted to WTO tariffs, increased border checks on people and increased border checks on goods.
