To support the success of the Choose Psychiatry campaign, which aims to see more junior doctors opting for this rewarding career path, the College wanted to demonstrate the significant impact a lack of psychiatrists was having on people who need timely support. We were able to support this aim in two ways. Initially we used our fast-turnaround public omnibus to find out what proportion of the population have diagnosed mental health conditions. We then used our specialist knowledge of the health and care sector to ask such people, specifically those who have had to wait long periods to see a specialist on the NHS and saw their condition deteriorate as a result, what the impact of this was. The College used this statistical evidence of the negative impacts of waiting for care and combined them with compelling case studies which the College collected, to pick up multi-channel coverage of the Choose Psychiatry campaign which will run again in Autumn 2019.
