Experian Data Breach Survey 3.0 2017
A survey of IT decision-makers at UK businesses and a survey among the British public, conducted on behalf of Experian.
  • More than half of British adults (54%) report that they have ever been affected by any of the fraudulent situations tested, compared to just 39% who said the same in 2016. Of the situations tested, British adults are most likely to say that they have had to change their password because they feared that an online account had been hacked or accessed by someone else; more than a third (36%) report doing so compared to 24% last year.
  • Four in five businesses surveyed have a data breach response plan in place (78%). This is a significant increase on 2016 when two thirds (65%) had a plan in place.
  • Two thirds of business decision-makers responsible for IT who have a data breach plan in place say that it covers customer notification (66%). More than half have legal and crisis or communications plans (57% and 52% respectively). Two in five respondents (41%) say their plans have remediation measures for customers.
  • Of those surveyed, one in five businesses have experienced a data breach in the past two years of any size (21%) while three quarters (74%) have not.

Methodology
ComRes interviewed 2,001 British adults online between 13th and 15th January 2017. Data were weighted by age, gender, region and social grade to be representative of all British adults aged 18+. ComRes also conducted similar research among British adults in 2016 and 2015.   ComRes interviewed 200 Business IT decision-makers in Great Britain between 9th – 16th January 2017. Respondents were surveyed across a variety of sectors and business sizes, ensuring good representation from all business types. All were screened to ensure they were involved in or aware of data breach management at their organisation, and all organisations had to be responsible for at least 100 PII records. Given the subject of the survey, respondents in the IT and Financial sectors are over-represented. ComRes also conducted similar research in 2016 with SMEs.
